Routine analysis with infrared technology – is it worth it?

New Zealand contract winery Torrent Bay Vintners Ltd has decided to invest in routine analysis with a handy new Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analyser instead of spending more on traditional laboratory analysis.

Three options were evaluated: Traditional wet chemistry, new infrared technology or outsourcing

The evalution came out in favour of the OenoFoss FTIR analyser because of the long term financial savings as well as the health and safety aspects of reducing staff exposure to hazardous chemicals.

"Now that we have the OenoFoss we can’t wait to start the next vintage," said Assistant winemaker, Susan van der Pol who conducted the study. “And of course, there is far more to the instrument that the cost savings. Just the fact that we can test and test again whenever we like will help us to make the right decisions and hit our quality targets consistently.”
